Vol. 383 No. 8

Written Answers. - Fisheries Licences.

166.

asked the Minister for the Marine the name and location of each application for licences to produce salmon smolts at freshwater sites since 1984; and whether these applications were granted.

167.

asked the Minister for the Marine if he will give the names and locations of each application for aquaculture licences in respect of coastal areas since 1980; and in each case whether the applications were successful.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 166 and 167 together.

My Department have received a large number of applications for fish farming licences and there are at present 660 applications for marine fish farms and 125 applications for freshwater projects (including smolt rearing) on hands. Many of these projects have been authorised by means of fish culture licences and draft foreshore licences from the former Department of Communications. Applications for licences are treated as confidential as I do not think it would be appropriate to disclose commercial or other details of applications. I am arranging to have a list of licences already issued forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible.

168.

asked the Minister for the Marine if he will give details of licences granted for salmon farms located off Inisthiar, Aran Islands, County Galway; and if he will name the shareholders in the company holding the licence.

A fish culture licence has been granted to Bradán Úr Atlantach Teoranta in respect of a salmon farm off Inis Oírr. Details of the shareholders in the company may be obtained from the Companies Registration Office.
