Vol. 383 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Westmeath Lake Pollution.

183.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the seriously polluted position of Lough Derravaragh, County Westmeath; and the proposals he has to improve the quality of this lake.

I am aware of some recent allegations that the condition of Lough Derravaragh has disimproved. However, the most recent data available to me, which is contained in the An Foras Forbartha Report "Water Quality in Ireland — the Current Position", published in 1987, indicates that the condition of Lough Derravaragh improved since 1982 and that the lake was in a satisfactory condition at the time of the report.

It is, however, a matter for Westmeath County Council, as pollution control authority for the area under the Water Pollution Act, 1977, to monitor the lake on a regular basis, to establish the extent of any problem which may exist at present, and to ensure that any necessary remedial measures are taken as soon as possible.
