Vol. 383 No. 8

Written Answers. - An Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge Work Plan.

19.

asked the Minister for Education whether she accepts all or part of the work plan presented to her in 1987 by An Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge; and, if so, the steps she has taken to secure its implementation.

The main points of the Comhdháil work plan refer to the establishment of a planning and monitoring unit to oversee the implementation of the plan, the review of courses, the standards of Irish for those entering the teaching profession, inservice training, and the fostering of oral competence in Irish and a spirit of bilingualism in schools.

In regard to planning, a task force has been established in my Department in relation to the implementation of policies concerning the promotion of Irish and this is further overseen by a joint committee of my Department and Bord na Gaeilge.

In the matter of courses and syllabi, I have as you know approved the new junior cycle syllabus in Irish for commencement in post-primary schools in September 1989. The senior cycle syllabus in Irish is being examined by the relevant course committee under the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. The Primary Curriculum Review Body will be paying particular attention to the Irish syllabus at primary level. I have arranged to meet with Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge and to discuss the various proposals in their work plan.
