The average cost per pupil in primary schools was £270 in 1979 and £755 in 1987. Allowing for inflation as shown in the consumer price index, the 1979 costs would have increased to £610 by 1987. Spending on a per capita basis, therefore, increased over and above the level of inflation for the period.
