Vol. 383 No. 8

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grant Eligibility.

49.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the large number of Irish students applying for places in British and Scottish institutions, she will allow those who qualify for higher education grants in this country to use them abroad.

The higher education grants scheme provides that grants shall be tenable in respect of degree and other approved courses of higher education in Ireland. The purpose of this requirement in the scheme is to give financial assistance to students ordinarily resident in Ireland who reach a minimum standard in the leaving certificate examination of the Department of Education but, who, because of family circumstances, might not be in a position to proceed to a university or other approved third level course in Ireland.

Having regard to the financial implications involved, I cannot consider an amendment along the lines suggested by the Deputy at a time when there are necessary constraints on Exchequer resources.
