Vol. 383 No. 8

Written Answers. - Junior Certificate Curriculum.

52.

asked the Minister for Education if it is her intention to include civics and political studies in the proposed new junior certificate curriculum.

260.

asked the Minister for Education whether she has any proposals to alter the status of civics or to include political education, in the widest sense, in the secondary school curriculum.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 52 and 260 together.

New syllabuses for the junior certificate are being introduced on a phased basis. The first phase, for implementation as from September 1989 comprises seven new syllabuses.

The subjects concerned are: art, craft and design, business studies, English, Irish, science, history and geography.

The review of the syllabuses in a further range of subjects will be addressed in subsequent phases of syllabus revision by the appropriate course committees. For the present, however, the existing syllabus in civics will continue in force as a non-examination subject to be followed by all recognised junior pupils in secondary schools.
