asked the Taoiseach the total number of unemployed on the register for the last week in December of every year from 1977 to 1987, inclusive.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of unemployed on the register for the last week in October of every year from 1977 to 1987 inclusive.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 70 and 71 together. The following table shows the number of persons on the live register on the last Friday of October and December 1977 to 1987.

asked the Taoiseach if he will define long term unemployed in respect of the register; the total number of long-term unemployed on the September 1988 register; and the percentage of the total unemployed which they make up.

The description "long term unemployed" is generally taken to refer to persons who have been continuously unemployed for a period of one year and over.

A special age by duration analysis of the live register is carried out for the months of April and October each year. On 22 April 1988, the latest date for which the information is available, there were 108,987 persons on the live register for 53 weeks and over, representing 44.9 per cent of the total on the register.
