Vol. 383 No. 8

Written Answers. - UN Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

80.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will outline the progress made to date by the interdepartmental committee under the aegis of the Attorney General's office who are considering changes necessary in domestic law to allow this country to ratify the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The work of the interdepartmental committee charged with examining the legislative and other implications of ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination is continuing. Considerable progress has been made in identifying the steps which must be taken before this country can proceed to ratification. Given the comprehensive nature of the Convention it is not possible to anticipate when this study will be concluded, although every effort will be made to complete the exercise as quickly as possible.
