Vol. 383 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Vacancies.

109.

asked the Minister for Justice when it is proposed to appoint a superintendent to the Dungarvan, County Waterford Garda district, which post has been vacant for six months; and if he will give the normal period for such a vacancy to be filled.

110.

asked the Minister for Justice when it is proposed to appoint a chief superintendent for the Waterford/Kilkenny Garda division; and if he will give the normal period for such a vacancy to be filled.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 109 and 110 together.

Arising from the recent appointment by the Government of 19 superintendents, the Garda authorities are at present making arrangements for the filling of vacancies for superintendents at a number of centres, including Dungarvan. It is expected that the vacancy at Dungarvan will be filled within a few weeks.

The Garda authorities are also making arrangements to hold, in the very near future, a competition for promotions to the rank of chief superintendent and it is proposed to fill the vacancy for chief superintendent of the Waterford/Kilkenny Garda Division as soon as new appointments to the rank are made by the Government.

There is no "normal" or standard period for the filling of vacancies for superintendents and chief superintendents. In filling these vacancies regard must be had to factors such as the general restrictions on the filling of vacancies in the Garda Síochána and the availability of candidates from promotion competitions.
