Vol. 384 No. 1

Written Answers. - Town Commission Grants.

87.

asked the Minister for the Environment whether his Department is considering the payment of a special grant to the newly established town commission in Leixlip, County Kildare, to cover all or part of the expenditure which they will incur in 1988; whether his Department provided such a grant when Greystones Town Commission, County Wicklow was established; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under section 26 of the local Government Act, 1946, the moneys required to meet the expenses of a town commission are to be supplied by the relevant county council upon receipt of an estimate and demand. I have indicated to Kildare County Council that I would be prepared to consider additional grant assistance to them arising from the demand from Leixlip Town Commissioners. I am awaiting details of the position from Kildare County Council. Wicklow County Council were given additional grant assistance in respect of the establishment of Greystones Town Commissioners.
