Vol. 384 No. 3

Written Answers. - B & I Performance and Prospects.

12.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the steps, if any, he is taking to ensure that B & I will continue to maintain its full range of services and its present level of employment; if he has satisfied himself regarding the short-term prospects for the company; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

68.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he has reviewed the performance of the B & I line action plan aimed at restoring the company to viability; if he has satisfied himself that the company has achieved the targets set out in the plan; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 12 and 68 together.

The question of the range of services and level of employment provided by the B & I is a matter for the board of the company.

The House will be aware that this year the B & I has been implementing a plan of action aimed at returning the company to viability. On the basis of this plan and its across-the-board support by the company's workforce, the Government last December agreed to provide the company with equity in 1988 and to review the position not later than the autumn of this year. That review is underway. I am gratified to note that the company's performance this year has been considerably better than forecast. I intend to present my findings to Government in the near future and, pending consideration of the position by the Government it would be inappropriate for me to offer further comment.
