Vol. 384 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dublin City-County Bus Services.

30.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he will allow competition on the Dublin city-county bus service in view of the poor quality of the service in parts of Dublin.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 14 and 30 together.

The licensing of road passenger transport services generally, including in the Dublin city and County area, is regulated by the Road Transport Act, 1932. A review of the provisions and operation of this Act has been completed in my Department. That review took account of the views expressed by many interests on the liberalisation of the licensing of bus services and the future role of private bus operators in the provision of scheduled public bus passenger transport services. I am, at present, finalising my proposals for updating the 1932 Act and I will shortly be seeking the approval of Government for them. Bus Atha Cliath, the CIE subsidiary which was established in 1987, has specific responsibility for the provision of bus services in Dublin and is continuing in its efforts to upgrade and improve the quality of its bus services.
