asked the Minister for the Environment if he will indicate the total number of staff employed in his Department in September, 1987; the total number of staff by grade in his Department who have to date opted for voluntary redundancy or early retirement under the existing scheme for this purpose; and the number of staff by grade and agency who have to date availed of the scheme in agencies, bodies or statutory authorities which operate under the aegis of his Department.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 88 of 3 November in regard to the numbers serving in my Department. To date, 41 officers of my Department comprising 4 principals, 5 assistant principals, 6 higher executive officers, 6 executive officers, 4 staff officers, 2 clerical officers, 3 principal auditors, 1 assistant chief engineering adviser, 1 supervising housing inspector, 1 housing inspector, 3 driver testers, 1 supervisor of cleaners, 3 cleaners and 1 messenger, have availed of the scheme. A further 18 officers have applied and their applications are under consideration.

Following are the overall numbers in respect of bodies under the aegis of my Department where staff have availed of the early retirement/voluntary redundancy scheme.

In the local authority service 503 officers, 1,733 general operatives, 327 craftsmen and 297 others have availed of the voluntary redundancy/early retirement scheme.

All the detailed information sought in respect of these bodies is not readily available.
