Vol. 384 No. 5

Written Answers. - Departmental Requirements Imposed on Business.

140.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the regulation, practice and information requirement which has been modified by his Department as a result of the decision of the Government last May that each Minister review all such regulations, practices and information requirements which have a cost impact on business and industry.

The review of statutory and information requirements impacting on business and industry undertaken in my Department was concerned with identifying requirements which are no longer necessary, or which could be simplified. Over the past year it has been found possible to reduce and simplify requirements significantly in a number of areas of my Department particularly import surveillance, quota administration and inward processing documentation, as well as improving services and reducing delays to the public in such areas as the Companies Registration Office. A number of other initiatives have been identified for implementation over the coming months. The report on my Department's review has been referred to the Industrial Costs Monitoring Group for assessment.

That group have already received submissions from a number of bodies representative of business and I would expect that these may suggest further areas for examination. The departmental report will be included in the composite report that I will be making to the Government and it would be inappropriate to provide full details in advance of that report.
