Vol. 384 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Transport.

237.

asked the Minister for Education if she will extend a school bus route for a person (details supplied) in County Cork in view of the special circumstances.

The child in question resides 13 miles from Holy Family Special School, Rathluirc. Free transport facilities have been offered to her on a service which operates within 1.8 miles of her home. This standard of service is considered reasonable, given her distance from school. It is regretted that it would not be open to the Department, in the circumstances, to incur extra expenditure in extending the bus route for this child.

238.

asked the Minister for Education the provision which has been made in the Estimates for 1989 for school transport; the provision in the 1988 Estimates; the Estimate for actual expenditure in 1988; and if it is proposed to make the provision through increased charges or curtailment of existing services.

The provision in the Estimates for 1989 for school transport is £26.194 million; the provision for 1988 is £31.933 million; the expected outturn for 1988 is £31.5 million. The question of increases, if any, in charges is at present under consideration. I have no plans to change existing entitlements to service.
