Vol. 384 No. 5

Written Answers. - Lead-free Petrol Prices.

62.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is his intention to adjust the duties on petrol to allow lead-free petrol to be sold cheaper than ordinary petrol.

In order to contribute to increased usage of unleaded petrol in this country I introduced a special excise duty rate of £28.67 per hectolitre (as opposed to £29.47 per hectolitre for leaded petrol) in the budget of 1988. This change has enabled garages to retail unleaded petrol at the same price as leaded petrol.

The taxation of petrol, including the differential excise duty on leaded and unleaded petrol, is kept under review in the light of all relevant circumstances.
