Vol. 384 No. 7

Written Answers. - Forest Plantation.

24.

asked the Minister for Energy the co-operation and monitoring arrangements which exist between the Department of Tourism and Transport and the Department of Energy regarding forest plantation in areas of great national beauty which are an integral part of our tourist product.

The Forest Service is very much aware of its responsibilities in regard to amenity and the environment and of the need to protect areas of great natural beauty in the interests of tourism. Forestry developments, both public and private, are closely monitored to ensure that they are compatible with these needs. In addition, the Forestry Act, 1988, which establishes Coillte Teoranta, the new state-sponsored forestry company, specifically enjoins it to have regard to the amenity and environmental consequences of its operations and provides for relevant consultations concerning forestry development in areas of scientific interest.

As part of its ongoing work in this area, the Forest Service liaises with appropriate bodies, including the Department of Tourism and Transport and Bord Fáilte.
