asked the Minister for Education the effect of financial cutbacks in terms of the total number of teachers employed in County Kildare in (a) permanent posts (b) temporary posts in respect of (i) primary teachers and (ii) second level teachers, both vocational and general; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The total number of primary teachers employed in permanent posts in County Kildare has fallen from 762 in 1987 to 731 in 1988. These figures include permanent posts being filled on a temporary basis during the absence of teachers on career breaks and other long-term leave of absence.
It would not be in accordance with normal practice to supply the information sought in respect of an individual vocational education committee.
In the remainder of the post-primary sector, the Department's records show that the numbers of teachers employed in County Kildare in the years 1987-88 and 1988-89 were as follows:

The effect of bringing the pupil-teacher ratio in the community-comprehensive school sector into line with that obtaining in secondary schools was to reduce the over-all teacher allocation in that sector in County Kildare by 3.8 whole-time teacher equivalents.
