asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total amounts contributed by (a) employers and (b) employees to the social insurance fund for each of the years from 1980 to 1988 inclusive, broken down by each social insurance class.

The tables which follow show contributions by employers and employees to the Social Insurance Fund broken down by class of contribution for each of the years from 1980 to 1987. Deriving these figures involved making assumptions which mean that the breakdown between classes is to an extent estimated. Figures for 1988 will not be available until late in 1989.

(a) The pay related and flat rate elements of the maternity scheme for women in employment were amalgamated from 1 April 1986.

(b) Figures are estimated. They represent the 1988 published estimates plus the cost of the Christmas bonus payments announced in October. There are indications of savings on some of the services, mainly unemployment payments because of reductions in the Live Register, but the precise amounts will not be known until March or April 1989.
