asked the Minister for the Environment, in respect of each local authority, the number of people who have availed of the Government's voluntary retirement package since its inception; in respect of such numbers, the average lump sum which they received upon retirement, where applicable; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The number of local authority staff to whom the terms of the scheme have been applied is shown in the following table.

The average cost of lump sum payments recouped by my Department to local authorities amounts to £8,095 per redundancy/early retirement.
