Vol. 384 No. 8

Written Answers. - Infant Sudden Deaths.

224.

asked the Minister for Health when he will publish the register of deaths, as promised earlier this year, to the Irish Infant Sudden Death Association.

The establishment of a sudden infant death register during 1988 was a commitment I gave to the Irish Sudden Infant Death Association. Following a proposal from the association a scientific sub-committee held a discussion thereon and arrangements were made in July within my Department and within the Central Statistics Office so that certificates relating to all infant deaths occurring during the first and second year of life would be released to that committee subject to strict conditions of confidentiality. These agreed arrangements will enable the register to be established under the auspices of the association's scientific committee without delay.
