Vol. 384 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Monaghan National School.

274.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the severe difficulties being experienced by the pupils and teachers of Doohamlet national school, County Monaghan because of (a) severe overcrowding in the old style three room school with 134 pupils at present on the roll (b) the long out-dated toilet facilities which were never designed for this number of children and which are both dangerous and a health hazard (c) the fact that the school is built on the verge at an acute corner on the main Castle-blayney-Ballybay road and is hazardous for children embarking and disembarking from the school bus and (d) the fact that due to the construction of a prefabricated building in the play area four years ago the children are forced to use the local graveyard adjoining the playground as a play area; and if she will sanction the building of a new school in the light of the above.

The question of providing grant aid in 1989 to the authorities of Doohamlet national school, County Monaghan, towards the cost of building essential new classroom accommodation is being considered, in conjunction with grant applications from other schools in a similar position. A decision will be conveyed to the school authorities as soon as possible.

I am asking my Department's professional advisers to report to me on the various matters mentioned by the Deputy, and on whether any works could be recommended for grant aid by way of short term relief pending the provision of a new building.
