Vol. 384 No. 8

Written Answers. - New Primary Schools.

283.

asked the Minister for Education when she proposes allowing the new primary school at Tooreen, Ballyhaunis, County Mayo to go to tender.

My Department has approved in principle the replacement of the existing national school building at Tooreen, Ballyhaunis, County Mayo, by a new building, but the preparation of plans has not proceeded beyond the sketch scheme stage. Because of the continuing pressure on the capital available to my Department for its national schools building programme, it is unlikely that sufficient priority can be given to this project in 1989 for the preparation of detail drawings, or that it will be possible to authorise the invitation of tenders.

284.

asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in sanctioning a new national school proposed for Clifden, County Galway.

My Department has approved in principle the grant-aiding of a new national school for Clifden, County Galway, but, because of the pressure on the capital available for its national schools building programme, has been unable to proceed with the invitation of tenders for work along the lines planned. The question of providing in 1989 an allocation of capital whereby essential classroom accommodation can be provided to replace such of the present accommodation as is substandard is at present being considered, and the school authorities will be informed of the outcome as soon as possible.
