Vol. 384 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Cork Nature Reserve.

66.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the significance of Lough Hyne Nature Reserve, County Cork; whether he is able to allocate any resource commitment to facilitating the important scientific work carried out there; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the significance of Lough Hyne Nature Reserve which is our only marine reserve. My Department has initiated a baseline survey of the water quality in the lake and hopes to extend this to cover invertebrates. A report on the research, which will be ongoing, will be included in the annual report to be issued under the Wildlife Act, 1976. The Zoology Department of University College, Cork also undertakes research in the area on an ongoing basis.
