Vol. 384 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dutch Auctions.

69.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will ask the Garda fraud squad to investigate urgently the operation of Dutch auctions in premises in Moore Street and Mary Street, Dublin 1, as there have been numerous complaints from people who state that they have been cheated at such auctions; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Except in very exceptional circumstances, it is not the practice for Ministers for Justice to disclose a particular individual or organisation is or has been the subject of a Garda investigation. However, I can say that I have been informed by the Garda authorities that they have received a number of complaints in connection with matters of the nature referred to in the question and that, while all such complaints have been fully investigated, evidence of breaches of the criminal law has not as yet become available. It is, of course, open to any person who believes that a crime has been committed to approach the Garda in the matter.
