Vol. 385 No. 1

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

81.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that Clarecastle National School, County Clare has over 327 pupils on the roll with no remedial teacher; the number of primary schools in the country with an equivalent number of students; the numbers of those who have remedial teachers; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The most up to date information available indicates that there are approximately 125 national schools with an enrolment of between 300-350 pupils. One third of these do not have the services of a special additional assistant for remedial teaching.

Available remedial teaching posts are allocated in accordance with a priority of educational need. The number of additional remedial posts to be sanctioned in any school year would depend on the financial resources available to the Department.

The application of Clarecastle national school will be considered in conjunction with those on hand in the light of the availability of such posts in the future.
