Vol. 385 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Schools Management.

85.

asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the respective roles and responsibilities in national schools of (a) the principal teacher (b) the chairperson of the board of management and (c) the board of management itself.

The principal teacher has overall responsibility subject to the authority of the board of management — for the day to day activities of the school. This includes responsibility for the organisation of school work, keeping of records and control of the pupils and the teaching-staff.

The chairperson presides at meetings of the board of management and acts on the board's behalf in relation to a wide variety of functions.

The board of management is charged with the direct government of the school, the appointment of teachers, subject to the Minister's approval, their removal and the conducting of the necessary correspondence.

Further information about the roles and responsibilities of these parties are contained in the handbook "Boards of Management of National Schools: Constitution of Boards and Rules Procedure". I have arranged for a copy of this handbook to be placed in the Oireachtas Library.
