Vol. 385 No. 1

Written Answers. - Secondary and Vocational Student Statistics.

100.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that in 1975-76 the percentage of secondary students who entered higher education was ten times higher than the percentage of vocational students; if figures are available in her Department regarding this situation at present; and, if so, if it is materially different from that of 1975-76.

I am not clear as to the source of the Deputy's statement that in 1975-76 the percentage of secondary pupils who entered higher education was ten times higher than the percentage of vocational pupils. Based on data in the report "Participation in Higher Education", commissioned by the Higher Education Authority and published in 1982, it is estimated that 34 per cent of secondary pupils in the final year of the leaving certificate course in 1979-80 transferred to Higher Education in 1980-81. The corresponding figure for vocational pupils was 23 per cent. It is estimated that 35 per cent of secondary pupils in the final year of the leaving certificate course in 1985-86 transferred to higher education in 1986-87. The corresponding figure for vocational pupils is estimated at 29 per cent.
