Vol. 385 No. 2

Written Answers. - Medical Card Eligibility.

194.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 22 who has been suffering from anorexia nervosa for the past four years, who is still in full time education and who has had a general medical services card of his own for the past two years even though his parents do not have a medical card for themselves and the rest of the family; that the Eastern Health Board have indicated that the medical card must be withdrawn because the parents no longer have a medical card; that this person, because of hospital visits, has consistently high medical costs; if, in the circumstances, he will make the necessary arrangements to ensure that a medical card continues to be issued in this case; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of determining eligibility for a medical card in individual cases is the responsibility of the chief executive officer of the appropriate health board. Accordingly, in this instance the Deputy's question has been referred to the chief executive officer, Eastern Health Board, with a request that he examine the matter and reply directly to the Deputy.
