asked the Minister for Defence the range, nature and financial level of tax free gratutities and various uniform allowances available to members of the Defence Forces; and the number of recipients of all allowances available to members of the Defence Forces by rank at 30 June 1987 and 30 June 1988.

Limerick West): The information requested by the Deputy regarding the range, nature and financial level of tax free gratuties and uniform allowances payable to members of the Permanent Defence Force is as follows:

Tax Free Gratuities for Extension of Service

Gratuities for extension of service are payable to non-commissioned officers and privates at the following rates:

Period of Extension

From 3 to 6 years

From 4 to 7 years (Naval Service only)

From 6 or 7 to 9 years

From 9 to 12 years

From 6 to 9 years (Technician who enlisted initially for 6 years)
