Vol. 385 No. 2

Written Answers. - Marino, Dublin, House Burglaries.

96.

asked the Minister for Justice the approximate number of house burglaries in the Marino district, Dublin 3, so far this year; the number of gardaí available to patrol the area; whether the gardaí can stem the increase in break-ins there; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that separate statistics are not available for the Marino area. Marino, however, forms part of the Clontarf subdistrict and Garda provisional figures indicate that there were 228 house burglaries in that subdistrict in the first nine months of this year. I am also informed that there has been a significant number of detections relating to house burglaries in the Marino area and charges have already been or will shortly be brought against persons in connection with a number of these offences.

The area is patrolled by foot and mobile patrols from Clontarf station. The number of gardaí deployed there is variable but I am assured that sufficient strength is made available to ensure that the situation is kept under control.

There is an active neighbourhood watch scheme in operation in Marino and this is playing a useful role in helping the Garda to curb the problem.
