asked the Minister for Defence the number of personnel who have left the Naval Service during the past 12 months; the steps he is taking to ensure that there will be adequate personnel for the Naval Service, especially for the new vessels; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

During the period 1 December 1987 to 30 November 1988 a total of 157 personnel left the Naval Service. Arrangements are now in hand for an intake of 100 recruits to the Naval Service to crew the two new vessels. This is in addition to the 125 recruits enlisted since November 1987.
