Vol. 385 No. 3

Written Answers. - Crime Statistics.

40.

asked the Minister for Justice the estimated number of crimes which have occurred in or around the Newtown industrial estate, Coolock, Dublin 5, in each of the last two years; and if he will make a statement on the contention by industrialists in the centre that this is a crime disaster area.

The number of indictable crimes recorded by the Garda for the area in question was 89 in 1986, 77 in 1987 and 83 for this year so far. I am informed by the Garda authorities that they are aware of the problem in this area and that they have taken appropriate measures to deal with it. In addition to attention from regular foot and mobile patrols the area is receiving particular attention from members of specialist Garda units. The Garda authorities assure me that the matter is being kept under review.
