I am aware of this public demand and I appreciate, as do the Garda authorities, the important role that is played by gardaí on beat duty. The number of gardaí on such duty varies from time to time and is determined in each area by the local Garda officers having regard to the level of available resources, other demands on Garda services, local circumstances and the time of the day or night.
