Vol. 385 No. 7

Written Answers. - Community Policing Units.

37.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of community policing units in Dublin; the number which are up to full strength; the steps he is taking to bring others up to full strength; if he has any plans to extend community policing, especially in areas where there may be difficult Garda/ community relations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a total of 29 members of the force assigned to stations in the Dublin Metropolitan Area are currently deployed on community policing pilot schemes. There is no fixed strength for such schemes — the number of members deployed on them depends on circumstances and can vary from one area to another.

The Garda authorities also report that consideration is being given to the establishment in the near future of further community policing schemes on a pilot basis in the Tallaght, Leixlip and Bray areas.
