Vol. 385 No. 7

Written Answers. - Laws on Firearms.

42.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the EC proposals to harmonise laws in regard to the purchase and possession of firearms; if these proposals will involve any change in Irish law; and if these proposals are meeting opposition from Belgium and France.

EC proposals for a directive on the control of the acquisition and possession of firearms are at present under discussion and agreement on their content has not yet been reached. In the circumstances, it is not possible to say what effect, if any, the proposals may have on Irish law, nor would it be appropriate for me to comment on the position of other member states regarding them.
