Vol. 386 No. 1

Written Answers. - Birr Sewerage Scheme.

217.

asked the Minister for the Environment the present position regarding the provision of a sewerage scheme for Birr, County Offaly; if he has received all the necessary information to enable him to make a decision thereon; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there is serious concern in the local community school in regard to the existing sewerage system; and when approval will be granted by his Department to Birr Urban District Council to enable this scheme to commence.

I am aware that the existing sewage treatment works, which is located near the Birr community school, is over-loaded and causing problems. Contract documents for a new scheme, including the provision of a new treatment works to be located a greater distance from the school, are under consideration in my Department. Having regard to existing commitments and other high priority schemes competing for the limited capital funds available, it is not possible to anticipate when the scheme might be approved to go to tender and construction.
