Vol. 386 No. 1

Written Answers. - AIDS Deaths.

228.

asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement in relation to reports in the Irish Medical Times that AIDS deaths are not being reported to his Department; and the steps he proposes to take to ensure that all AIDS death are reported to his Department.

To date in this country 77 cases of full AIDS and 34 deaths have been reported to my Department. Dr. J.H. Walsh, National AIDS Co-ordinator, is in contact with the doctors clinically responsible for these cases and he is notified when a death occurs. In addition scans of death certificates are carried out periodically to ensure that cases are not missed. I am satisfied, in the circumstances, that everything is being done to ensure full reporting of AIDS deaths and that the current reporting system is working effectively.
