Vol. 386 No. 1

Written Answers. - Use of Pesticides.

41.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the funding which he has provided for research into the harmful effects of pesticides used in agriculture; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department's Estimate for 1989 will include some £200,000 for the running of the Pesticide Laboratories at Harcourt Terrace and Abbotstown, Castleknock. These laboratories form part of the pesticide control service of my Department which, in implementation of European Communities legislation, ensures control on maximum permissible residue levels in fruit and vegetables, cereals and food of animal origin; the prohibition of marketing and use of specified prohibited active substances and the classification, packaging and labelling of pesticides to ensure that their marketing and use conform to prescribed standards. My Department carries out ongoing examination and control on the harmful effects of pesticides to ensure maximum protection on human health and the environment.
