Vol. 386 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Charges.

149.

asked the Minister for Health if he will clarify the situation in relation to hospital charges in the case of a road traffic accident where an insurance claim will apply; if such charges are uniform across the country; and if he will outline his policy in this area.

The Health (Amendment) Act, 1986 enables charges to be made for in-patient and out-patient services provided for persons in respect of the treatment of injuries caused by the use of mechanically propelled vehicles in public places. The Act also makes provision for the waiving of the whole or part of the charge in certain circumstances. In general the charges are based on the actual cost of providing the services.
