Vol. 387 No. 2

Written Answers. - Education for Deaf Students.

29.

asked the Minister for Education the plans she has to improve access to third level education for deaf students.

Third level institutions are providing facilities for students with disabilities in so far as it is possible within the resources available to them. The arrangements in each case are a matter for the authorities of the institution concerned.

In the case of the VEC third level colleges, the position is that the vocational education committee are the statutory bodies entrusted with the management of these colleges, including all matters relating to access for students. I am aware, however, that applications from handicapped students for entry to the colleges can be dealt with on an individual basis and that there is sufficient flexibility in the mode of teaching to allow such students to avail of the services of the colleges.
