Vol. 387 No. 4

Written Answers. - PMPS Studies.

92.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce in respect of the years 1973 to 1983 inclusive, if he will give details of the number and nature of consultancy studies commissioned by him on the affairs of the PMPA; the dates of commencement and completion of each study; the names of the consultants involved; the costs involved in each case; the conclusions of each study; and the action his Department has taken arising from these studies.

In its role as supervisory authority of insurance companies, my Department, from time to time, engages consultants to carry out general and specific studies of the accounts of both life and non-life insurers. These studies are carried out on a confidential basis at the discretion of the Department as a normal ongoing feature of supervision, and it would not be in the interests of that supervisory function to disclose details of them.

However, in the case of the company named by the Deputy, the Minister's petition to the High Court in October 1983 for the appointment of an administrator to the company necessarily involved the publication of the fact that two studies had been carried out in the recent past in relation to that company. Information in relation to these studies was given in the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 18 of 2 December 1986.
