Vol. 387 No. 4

Written Answers. - Diabetes Sufferers Drugs.

120.

asked the Minister for Health if free drugs are available to all sufferers of diabetes under the long term illness card; and, if not, the exceptions which apply.

Diabetics who are medical card holders have all their prescription drugs, medicines and associated requisities supplied free of charge through the general medical services scheme. As medical card holders, they also enjoy the benefits of a free general practitioner service.

Under the long term illness scheme, diabetics who are not eligible for medical card cover, are supplied free of charge with the drugs, medicines and appliances needed for the direct treatment of their diabetes. Such patients attend their general practitioner as private patients.
