Vol. 387 No. 6

Written Answers. - Chilean Human Rights Case.

32.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will join with Amnesty International and other Chilean and international organisations in condemning the harassment of the Vicaria de la Solidarida, which is one of the main human rights defence groups in Chile; if he will call for an end to the notorious Vicaria case and the release from jail of the two Vicaria staff members; and if he will convey his views on the matter to the Chilean authorities.

Ambassadors of the EC member states in Santiago acting on behalf of the Twelve, including Ireland, have called on the head of the Vicaria de la Solidaridad Organisation to express the support of the Twelve for its activities at this time of difficulty and to make clear that they deplore any harassment of the organisation or interference with its legitimate role of safeguarding human rights.

At our request, the representatives of the Twelve in Santiago are investigating the allegation that two staff members of the "Vicaria" have been arrested. So far they have not been able to establish a basis for the report.
