Vol. 388 No. 6

Written Answers. - Junior Cycle Assessment.

85.

asked the Minister for Education if she will reconsider her decision in relation to the new Junior Cycle to reduce the originally proposed three levels of assessment to two, because of the inevitable impact of such reduction on weaker students.

It is not true, as implied in the questions, that I originally proposed to have three levels of assessment for junior certificate English. My brief to the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment clearly specified assessment at two levels. As I have made clear on numerous occasions I do not believe that the introduction of a third and lower level in English would be in the best interests of any of our young people.
