Vol. 388 No. 8

Written Answers. - Nuclear Third Party Liability.

21.

asked the Minister for Energy whether he has satisfied himself regarding the present provisions of the international regimes for nuclear third party liability, that is, the Paris and Vienna Conventions; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department, in consultation with the Attorney General's Office, is examining the question of accession to one or more of the conventions on third party liability in the field of nuclear energy. These conventions have some shortcomings from the point of view of non-nuclear countries and the implications of membership must be fully considered before it can be concluded whether it would be in Ireland's interest to accede to one or more of them.
