Vol. 388 No. 8

Written Answers. - Guilford Four.

47.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make further strong representations to the British authorities to transfer the Guilford Four to prison in the London area and grant permission for independent medical examinations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government are prepared to support any request from the Guilford Four to the British authorities for a transfer to London in order to facilitate preparations for their appeal hearing. We have had initial discussions on the matter with the British authorities. We understand however that, to date, no such transfer request has been received by the Home Office from any member of the Guilford Four or their legal representatives.

The Government would also be prepared to support any well-founded request by any member of the Guilford Four for an independent medical examination.
