Vol. 388 No. 8

Written Answers. - Visits by Warships.

48.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the rules governing visits by warships from other countries, stating that they are not engaging in naval exercises and they are not carrying nuclear weapons, are brought to the attention of countries who apply for permission to visit Irish ports; and if he is satisfied that these rules are being obeyed.

It has been the policy of successive Governments to grant permission for visits to Irish ports by foreign naval vessels provided that such visits do not form part of a naval exercise and that the vessels are not carrying nuclear weapons. My Department ensures that countries which seek permission for visits by their naval vessels to an Irish port are aware of these and any other conditions laid down and the Government are confident that existing arrangements are adequate to ensure that the conditions laid down are upheld.
