Vol. 388 No. 8

Written Answers. - Bogland Designated as Preserved Areas.

89.

asked the Minister for Finance the location, extent and type of bogland designated as preserved areas in the country; and if he has any proposals for inclusion of any further areas to be so preserved.

My Department own 622 hectares of raised bog at Clara and Raheenmore and all of this is protected under the Wildlife Act, 1976. In addition, an area of 119 hectares of raised bog at Mongan owned by An Taisce is statutorily protected.

My Department own approximately 14,000 hectares of blanket bog at various locations around the country. These are: Pettigo Plateau, County Donegal; Knockmoy Sheskin, County Mayo; Mount Brandon, County Kerry; Erik Bog, County Kerry; Owenboy, County Kerry; Loughbarra, County Donegal; Slievebloom Mountains, County Laois; and Glenealo Valley, County Wicklow.

Seven thousand three hundred and forty one hectares have been given statutory protection under the Act and the remainder will be brought under the protection of the Act in due course. Further areas of raised and blanket bog suitable for conservation will be purchased as resources permit.
