Vol. 388 No. 8

Written Answers. - Royal Canal.

90.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is concerned at the condition of the Royal Canal between Binn's Bridge, Drumcondra Road and Clarke's Bridge, Summerhill Parade, Dublin 9; if the Office of Public Works can have this section properly dredged or cleaned out and the boundary wall at Portland Place repaired; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The section of the Royal Canal mentioned in the question was cleaned out in the summer of 1988 under a community welfare service scheme. The dredging of this stretch of the canal will be undertaken as part of the planned restoration of this canal as a navigable waterway. The special problems of the area between Binn's Bridge and Clarke's Bridge are recognised and it is hoped that plans will be drawn up in the near future in consultation with Dublin Corporation for the overall upgrading of this area.

The boundary wall mentioned in the question is the property of Dublin Corporation and the question of its repair has been brought to their attention.
